Low back pain is the leading cause of disability in the world: 80% of people experience it at least once in their life. Chronic low back pain leads to job loss and financial difficulties, affecting more than 600 million people. WHO has been developing recommendations for non-surgical treatment of this pain for three years, including in the elderly.
Lumbar pain is divided into specific (10%) and non-specific (90%). The former requires treatment of the underlying disease, including surgery. Non-specific pain is usually associated with an unhealthy lifestyle and is treated without surgery. Treatment includes physiotherapy, exercise, healthy habits and ergonomic adjustments at home and at work.
Particular attention should be paid to the mattress and pillow: studies show that medium mattress firmness reduces morning back pain in 56% of people. The right mattress and pillow can significantly improve the condition of the spine and relieve pain.
