Founded in 1841, Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, is in danger of closing due to financial problems.
Last week, the university newspaper reported on a "chaotic meeting in mid-December 2023 to discuss cutting a number of academic programs
Provost Matthew Evans, who also oversees academic, budgetary, and operational matters, said that the university expects "to run out of reserves in 2025-26."
And the Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS) will be out of money this year if cuts are not made.
"This is extremely serious," Evans said. "Queen's could disappear if we address this issue." FAS pre-degree courses, which have fewer than 10 students and graduate courses, which have fewer than 5, are expected to close next year.
“Our expenses have significantly exceeded our revenues, and our deficit for this academic year will be more than $62 million, 10% of our total budget of $600 million.”
