On May 26, King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived in Ottawa for an official visit to open the House of Commons and deliver the Speech from the Throne, the first time a reigning king has delivered a speech in the House in nearly a century. Queen Elizabeth II did so in 1957 and 1977.

The visit began with a stroll through Lansdowne Park, a visit to the market, and a game of street hockey, with the king symbolically throwing in a puck. The couple then headed to Rideau Hall, where the king planted a tree and the queen was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council.

Tomorrow, Charles will open the House of Commons by walking in procession down Wellington Street and delivering the government’s agenda.

Please note: Partial closures of downtown Ottawa and airport roads will be in place on Monday and Tuesday for the visit.
