The National Capital Commission officially opened the refurbished Kìwekì Point, formerly Nipen Point, next to the National Gallery on Friday. The $45 million renovation project, which began in 2014, includes a new pedestrian bridge to Majors Hill Park.

The site and bridge are named in the Algonquin language: Kìwekì means “homecoming” and Pìdàban means “dawn.” The project celebrates the Algonquin culture and history.

“We’ve created a special place for reflection, connection, and renewal,” said Norm Odjic, chief of the Tribal Council of the Anishinabeg Nation of Algonquins.

Kìwekì Point is located on unceded Algonquin land and overlooks the Ottawa River (Kichi Sibi). The area is decorated with animal sculptures and offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the culture of the indigenous people.
