Despite the calendar spring, the Capital Region is bracing for a severe winter blow. Environment Canada has issued warnings for persistent freezing rain and snowfall beginning Friday night and continuing through Sunday.
Up to 20 cm of snow, accompanied by ice pellets, is forecast for parts of Eastern Ontario. After a brief respite on Saturday, freezing rain will hit the region on Sunday, with up to 10 mm of ice possible.
These conditions could lead to widespread power outages, icy roads, and downed trees due to the weight of the ice. Forecasters advise avoiding weekend travel, especially Sunday.
Ice storm warnings have also been issued for southern Ontario, including Durham and York Region, where up to 10 mm of ice is also expected. The precipitation will begin with rain Friday night and, depending on temperature fluctuations, could change back to snow and ice on Saturday.
We recommend that you exercise caution and monitor weather updates.
