The prime minister’s office confirmed that the discussion was constructive. The leaders agreed to begin talks on a new format for economic and defense relations after the election. Before that, Canadian International Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and US Commerce Minister Howard Lutnick will continue the discussions.

Again, Trump announced 25% tariffs on cars and auto parts, effective April 3 and May 3, respectively. He also imposed tariffs on steel, aluminum and a range of Canadian goods, but gave a one-month reprieve on goods that comply with the USMCA agreement.

Carney said Canada is prepared to take tough measures in response, and stressed that the country must learn to live in a world where it cannot rely on the United States. Pierre Poilievre supported the idea of normalizing relations and returning to mutually beneficial trade between the two sovereign states.
