A majority of Canadians said they have already replaced or plan to replace American products with domestic ones due to the threat of tariffs from US President Donald Trump, the Angus Reid Institute reports.
Key findings from the survey:
- 85% of respondents intend to reduce or have already reduced their purchases of goods from the US.
- 48% are replacing as many goods as possible with Canadian equivalents.
- 37% choose Canadian products if the price and quality are comparable to American ones.
However, in Saskatchewan and Alberta, about 20% of residents do not plan to change their consumer habits. Political scientist Duane Bratt of Mount Royal University believes that the picture is similar across the country, taking into account the survey’s margin of error.
“The vast majority want to remain Canadian and support our economy,” Bratt said. He added that changes in consumer behavior are already noticeable, including a decrease in the number of shopping trips to the US.
