Animals with nowhere to go: Baby moose on the loose in Beaverbrook, Kanata

A baby moose pauses on Morenz Terrace in Kanata before crossing Knudson Dr. and then making its way through a property and onto a nearby golf course on Friday, May 31, 2024.

A mother spotted a baby moose in the Beaverbrook section of Kanata on Friday morning while dropping her daughter off at daycare.

Tara Cowley says when she saw the baby moose around 7:30 a.m., she stopped to call 911 and take some photos.

“At first I thought it was a horse, and then I saw it was a baby moose and I was sad! With all the development in the city, the animals have nowhere to go,” she said.

“Kanata just keeps building and building. The wildlife has nowhere to go.” However, she said her 3-year-old daughter thought it was “the coolest thing in the world.”

Although the last Cowley heard of the animal was that it was heading toward Theron Road, she is hopeful that it can be rescued.

Ottawa Bylaw asks people to slow down and use caution when driving in the Beaverbrook area of Kanata. It says there is no threat to public safety.

“We are working with our partners to return the animal to its natural habitat,” Ottawa Bylaw said in a statement on X.

If you encounter large wild mammals in residential areas, Ottawa Bylaw advises letting the animal loose and calling this number: 613-236-1222.
