Wet weather blamed for long grass in Ottawa.
Ottawa received 2.2 inches (57.8 mm) of rain from May 21 to 30, including a record 1.5 inches (39.3 mm) on May 27.
Several people took to social media last week to complain about the length of grass on city rights-of-way and fields across Ottawa. The City of Ottawa says the weather has been ideal for grass growth, and the length is slowing down work.
“The weather this spring has been optimal for grass growth this season, with rainy days each week followed by sunny breaks. Wet conditions not only result in increased grass and weed growth, but also increase the number of days staff are unable to mow because mowing takes longer in wet conditions,” Allison Downs, director of parks and forestry services, said in a statement.
"We have completed the first pass in most areas and are starting the second. We are working to catch up in the next couple of weeks as the grass growth starts to slow down as we move into summer conditions," Downs said.
