Quebec Premier François Legault announces resignation
It was reported today that Quebec Premier François Legault is officially stepping down after more than seven years in power. He made the announcement at a press conference in Quebec City, saying Quebecers want change and that the decision was made “in the interest of the party and the province” ahead of the upcoming election.
Legault, the founder of the governing Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), will remain in office until the party selects a new leader. That is expected to happen just a few months before the provincial election on October 5, 2026.
📉 The resignation comes amid falling CAQ support in polling, with the party trailing the Parti Québécois, and growing voter dissatisfaction over a number of controversial reforms and laws.
Legault has served as premier since 2018, winning two consecutive elections. His departure marks a new chapter in Quebec politics and creates an opportunity for renewed leadership within the governing party.
