Don Davies NDP

OTTAWA - After the New Democratic Party of Canada (NDP) lost its official status in the House of Commons, interim leader Don Davis said the party is working to preserve its core resources through talks with other parties and the Domestic Economy Council.

The NDP won just seven seats in the election, down 17 and its worst showing since 1993. The loss of its status means it has limited access to parliamentary committees and questions for the government.

"We've kept our offices and gained access to the parliamentary lobby — that's progress," Davis said. He stressed that the NDP won 1.2 million votes and has the right to participate in parliament.

Prime Minister Mark Carney's minority government has shown no desire to repeat the alliance with the NDP that Justin Trudeau did by backing dental and pharmaceutical projects.

The NDP will now focus on affordable housing, health care and supporting workers hurt by U.S. trade policies. The question of a new party leader and a revision of the election campaign remains open.
