Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, leader of Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel, arrested in Texas

Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada was one of the world’s most notorious drug lords. He was arrested in El Paso alongside Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the son of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who is currently serving time in a U.S. prison. Both were arrested at a private airport, the U.S. Department of Justice confirmed.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said Zambada and Lopez lead one of the world’s most violent drug cartels. In February, Zambada was indicted on charges of conspiring to manufacture and distribute fentanyl, a deadly drug that poses a serious threat to the United States.

Zambada owns several legitimate businesses in Mexico, including a dairy farm and a hotel. In addition to fentanyl trafficking, he has been charged with murder, kidnapping, money laundering, and organized crime.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the drug lord was tricked into boarding a plane as part of an FBI and Homeland Security operation.
