$73M pledged for seniors housing

In an appeal to rural voters where discontent with the Liberals is strongest, the federal government has pledged $73 million to build a seniors housing complex in Sudbury, Ontario.

The long-discussed project broke ground in December 2023, and the amount announced at a press conference with local MPs is comprised of $3 million in direct financing and a $70 million repayable loan. Mayor Paul Lefebvre called it a "historic moment."

The 347-unit complex at 302 Van Horne St. will include 105 affordable units in close proximity to the GOVA transit terminal downtown, and all the necessary infrastructure. “This is a gigantic project,” the mayor emphasized, “and we desperately need it, with only 1.7% of affordable housing.”
