Samuel Laurin-Gauvreau

OTTAWA — Jacob Blanchard, 25, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon after fatally stabbing Omar Jonathan Grant on Saturday night.

Police responded to the Ottawa Community Housing apartment building at 500 St. Laurent Blvd. around 9:25 p.m. The two men were taken to hospital: Grant died from a stab wound, while the other victim, a man in his 30s, suffered a head injury and is in stable condition.

Blanchard has already appeared in court and remains in custody. The second suspect, 25-year-old Samuel Laurent-Gauvreau (pictured above), is wanted federally.

Residents of the building are alarmed by the shooting and are demanding to meet with Ottawa Community Housing officials. Grant's family has organized a fundraiser for his funeral.

This is the third homicide in Ottawa in 2025. In January, Wilson Sabarros, 58, was killed in Barhaven, and Mia Tajada and Omar Assad have been arrested in connection with the case. In February, Amr Zohair, 40, a co-defendant of Marc Lebrun-Fortin, was killed in the Ottawa-Carleton Jail.

Police are asking for witnesses to call 613-236-1222 (ext. 5493) or anonymously through Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-8477, crimestoppers.ca).
