Behind the Scenes
Today, we're taking you on a special behind-the-scenes tour of Ottawa South Denture Clinic to show you some of the aspects of the clinic that most patients don't see, know about, or even think about during their visits.
Whether you're new to dentures or have been wearing them for a long time, understanding what goes on behind the scenes can give you a greater respect for the care and craftsmanship that goes into every smile they create.
The team at the clinic is comprised of experienced denture technician Evgeniy Sorokaty, dedicated office manager Fon, and talented certified dental technician Khalil.
Dental technicians work behind the scenes in the lab to create the necessary components of dentures, such as bite blocks, fittings, finishing, relining, and more. Prosthodontists perform all face-to-face patient care including impressions, oral scanning, bite detection, fittings, adjustments, and lab work to perfect each denture. It is truly a team effort between prosthodontists and dental technicians to create beautiful smiles that each patient is proud and happy with.
Differences Between Prosthodontists and Dentists
While both prosthodontists and dentists play important roles in oral health care, their areas of expertise differ. Dentists have a broader scope of practice including diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of oral health conditions. In contrast, prosthodontists specialize specifically in the fabrication and fitting of removable dental appliances such as dentures, anti-snoring devices, mouth guards for athletes, and other prosthetic devices for patients who have lost teeth. Prosthodontists often collaborate with dentists, especially when patients require specialized services such as tooth extractions, implant placement, restorative work, hygiene, or cavity treatment. It is important to carry out dental work such as fillings, cleanings, and crowns before the dentures are made to ensure the best fit and functionality. This collaboration between dentists and prosthodontists ensures that patients receive comprehensive care, with each specialist focusing on their own area of expertise.
The Daily Life of a Prosthodontist
A prosthodontist’s day is much more dynamic than you might expect. They are a bit like teachers – full of energy and eager to share their knowledge with others. Each day begins with going over the schedule, followed by patient consultations, treatment discussions, documentation, oral scanning, digital printing and design of dentures, and working in collaboration with other specialists. Prosthodontists are hands-on people, sometimes wearing multiple hats in the clinic, especially in emergency situations. You may even find your denture tech answering phones, helping with insurance, and of course, making your dentures in the lab!
Using Digital Technology in Denture Care
Digital technology has definitely made its mark on the denture industry. While not all processes are digital yet, many cutting-edge practices, including Ottawa South Denture Clinic, are embracing digital technology to improve the patient experience. Digital impressions, for example, have transformed the denture making process. Instead of taking traditional, awkward impressions that can cause a gag reflex, digital impressions are taken using a scan of the mouth. It’s quick, clean, and much more comfortable for patients. They also produce more accurate and faster results, often at the same or lower cost. Digital files are easier to share and modify, which improves collaboration with other professionals. Patients can also more easily visualize the end result, making the treatment planning process easy and straightforward.
The new federal Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is coming!
Ottawa South Denture Clinic is proud to announce that they now accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), making dental care more affordable for you and your family.
