Three Ottawa lifeguards will get a chance to keep an eye on athletes competing in aquatic sports at the Paris Olympics later this month.

John Rupp and father-daughter duo Stephan and Karianne Cliche were chosen from more than 800 candidates who applied in an open call organized by the Quebec Lifesaving Society to help keep athletes safe at the 2024 Paris Games. The lifeguards will be among 12 volunteers selected in Canada.

More than 45,000 volunteers from around the world will take part in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Summer Games begin July 26 and end Aug. 11.
