The Earth's population will peak in the mid-2080s

The UN has published a report according to which the world's population will peak in 2084 at about 10.3 billion people, and by 2100 will decline to just under 10.2 billion.

Average life expectancy will increase to 81.7 years by the end of the 21st century. The largest natural population decline is projected in China and India, but they will remain the most populous countries. In Russia, the population will decline to 126.4 million people, in Germany - to 70.9 million, in Ukraine - to 15.3 million. In more than half the countries in the world, the birth rate is already below the level necessary to support population growth.

By the late 2070s, people over 65 are expected to outnumber those under 18. This change in demographic structure may require the use of technology to increase productivity at any age. UN projections for 2022 had predicted a larger population peak, but demographics have changed faster than expected. Some countries are experiencing lower fertility than expected, and regions with traditionally high fertility are seeing faster declines.
