WestJet has asked the federal government to take steps to reduce the cost of flying for passengers.
But it’s unclear who will cover the extra fees for aircraft maintenance and other services.
WestJet Group CEO Alex von Hoensbrech is proposing a temporary freeze on payments by passengers outside their seats, such as the Airport Improvement Fees (AIF), as well as GST and PST, in addition to the cost of navigation, flight distance and ticket price. “Everyone agrees that the fee structure is too high,” Hoensbrech said.
I just finished a visit to Atlantic Canada, where I met with premiers and local business leaders, and they all say the same thing: change is needed.”
It turns out that the country’s airports pay Transport Canada half a billion dollars in rent each year.
WestJet believes this needs to stop and redirect the money to infrastructure improvements, or at least lower the price.
The government shifts all responsibility onto the passengers, who, in essence, support it.
