Alain Bellefeuille, 47, was sentenced to life in prison for the premeditated murder of Ontario Police Service (OPP) Sergeant Eric Muller and the attempted murder of two other officers.
The tragedy occurred on May 11, 2023, in the village of Bourges, 50 km from Ottawa. Police arrived in response to a call about a man in mental distress. Despite the fact that the officers clearly identified themselves and knocked on the door 64 times, Bellefeuille, armed with a rifle, ambushed them and opened fire. Sergeant Muller was fatally wounded. His last moments were recorded on a body camera - the attacker leaned over the dying officer and whispered: "You messed with the wrong guy."
Constable Mark Lauzon was seriously injured, the third officer - slightly.
The jury found Bellefeuille guilty of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. The convict refused to speak in court. He will not be eligible for parole for 25 years. Mueller's family called the incident a tragedy from which they "will never recover."
