Election sensation: Liberal newcomer wins surprise
Political newcomer Bruce Fanjoy has won a shock victory over Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre in the riding of Carleton. The results were not known until after 5 a.m. — and they have caused a storm of emotions.
A father of two and an advocate for green technology, Fanjoy campaigned hard on a platform of personal accessibility, supporting farmers, cutting costs, and protecting Canadian sovereignty in the face of a tariff war with the United States.
He mobilized disaffected voters, including former Conservatives, by promising renewal and change. The campaign was particularly energized by Liberal leader Mark Carney, who focused his campaign on the economy and opposing Donald Trump.
“I always believed there was a path to victory in Carleton,” Fanjoy told the Ottawa Citizen. He won by nearly 4,000 votes.
Poilievre, who has represented Carleton since 2004, became the first Conservative leader to fail to retain his seat since Kim Campbell in 1993.
"This wouldn't have happened without you," Fanjoy thanked his volunteers.
