Alain Bellefeuille

Jurors were shown footage from his body camera at the murder trial of Ontario police Sergeant Eric Muller, which captured his final moments. He was shot to death while entering a home in the village of Bourges during a well-being check on May 11, 2023.

Accident Alain Bellefeuille claims he was unaware that police were arriving and mistook them for burglars. He opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle without seeing a target, firing 17 bullets — one killed Muller and two wounded other officers. Bellefeuille immediately called an ambulance, disarmed himself, and let paramedics in.

He can be heard leaning over the dying Muller and saying, “You broke into the wrong house… I’m sorry I had to shoot you.”

Prosecutors insist it was a premeditated killing and that Bellefeuille was waiting for police. The defense attorney insists his client acted out of fear, not knowing who had entered the home.

Belleufel, who had no criminal record and a licensed gun owner, claims his actions were driven by panic and the misperception that the situation was an intruder.

He pleads not guilty to first-degree murder and attempted murder. The trial continues.
