Ramadan

On Saturday, the holy month of Ramadan begins for millions of Muslims around the world. Its beginning is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, so the date may vary slightly in different countries.

In Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Lebanon, Egypt, Qatar, Jordan and Syria, March 1 has been declared the first day of fasting.

Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. During this month, Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking and intimacy from dawn to sunset. In the evening, it is customary to gather with family and friends to break the fast.
