A major weather test hit Ottawa when the Alberta Clipper (a fast-moving low pressure system that originates in or near the Canadian province of Alberta, east of the Rocky Mountains, and tracks east-southeast) brought heavy snowfall beginning on February 28.
Up to 15 cm of snowfall was forecast to continue through March 1. This event followed an unexpected warm spell in late February, and the sudden return of severe winter conditions was noticeable. Environment Canada warned of reduced visibility, impacting local recreational opportunities.
In particular, the Rideau Canal Ice Rink was closed at 6 p.m. on February 28 for snow removal and ice preservation, impacting local winter recreational activities. The timing of the snowfall in late February and early March made the event especially significant for Ottawa residents.
