Stellantis has quietly deprived the Jeep Grand Cherokee L of its V8 engine

A plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain is expected to appear in the model’s lineup in the future.

The company announced the end of production of the V8 engine back in the last quarter, although it did not specify the date when the last unit would roll off the assembly line. According to Jeep statistics, less than 4% of customers chose the Grand Cherokee L with a 5.7-liter engine during the last full year it was available. Currently, the three-row SUV is offered only with a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, its output is 297 hp, and the maximum torque is 348 Nm. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission without any alternative. However, it is expected that in the future, the Jeep Grand Cherokee L lineup will be replenished with a version with a hybrid installation and the addition of 4xe to the name. At the heart of this system is a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder engine that works in tandem with a belt-driven starter-generator and an electric motor that is integrated into an eight-speed automatic. The combined peak output of this system in the Grand Cherokee is 381 hp and 637 Nm.

To date, the starting price of a three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee L with a V6 in its home market, in the United States, is $40,035.
