Health Canada warns of rise in norovirus cases in Ontario

Health Canada says norovirus cases are on the rise in Canada.

Norovirus is a common and highly contagious virus that causes nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cramping, and diarrhea.

"The number of reported norovirus cases in 2024 is higher than expected compared to the historical average over the previous five years," Health Canada said.

However, Health Canada noted that the spread of other viruses has slowed during the coronavirus pandemic due to restrictions.

Norovirus is spread through contaminated surfaces and close contact with infected people. Symptoms of the disease appear 12 to 48 hours after infection.

Health Canada says the best way to protect against norovirus is to wash your hands with soap. Stay hydrated for the first 48 hours and take anti-nausea medications. No treatment is needed.
