The Trudeau government has announced $99 million to address rental housing affordability, and an additional $5 million annually to help investigate rising food prices.
During a press conference, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and Innovation, Science and Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne called it part of Canada's economic plan.
The additional money to the Canada Housing Benefit is intended to support low-income people living in rental housing.
Freeland also highlighted a commitment to provide $100 million in “emergency winter assistance” to 85 communities to build additional shelters for the homeless. Ottawa is trying to show that it is concerned about the rising cost of food and other necessities by increasing funding to $5 million for new projects partnerships with organizations that investigate price inflation and cases of defrauding consumers by underselling products and other forms of "corporate collusion." Conservative Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre said that "after eight years of Justin Trudeau, housing costs have doubled. I would freeze spending to balance the budget and achieve a real reduction in the cost of living.
