A bill to reduce food prices and “crack down on corporate enrichment” has passed its second reading in Parliament
A bill aimed at reducing food prices and “crack down on corporate enrichment” has passed its second reading in the House of Commons.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, who introduced the bill back in September 2023, said it was a first step in creating more affordable options for Canadians.
“The Liberals and Conservatives have used every procedural tactic to prevent it from being passed,” Singh said, stressing that he has not backed down from his intentions.
If the third and final reading is also successful, Bill-352 will work in three directions.
This includes increasing fines for negotiated prices, overpricing, and other deception of buyers, combating gaps in legislation that allow companies to avoid competition, and strengthening measures against large corporations that have monopolized the food market.
