Nunavut MP Lori Idlout Joins the Liberal Party

Member of Parliament for Nunavut Lori Idlout has officially left the NDP caucus and joined Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal caucus. The move was announced on March 11 and confirmed by both the Liberals and Canadian media.

In her statement, Idlout explained that this is a critical moment for the North and for Nunavut. According to her, the country needs a strong federal government that makes decisions with Nunavut, not simply about Nunavut. She stressed that she wants to work in partnership with the government to strengthen the North, protect the interests of territorial residents, and create long-term economic opportunities for northerners.

Mark Carney welcomed Idlout to the Liberal team, saying that a strong North and a strong Nunavut are essential to a safer, more resilient, and more prosperous Canada. At a time of growing attention to Arctic sovereignty, defence, and northern infrastructure, this move carries not only party-political significance but strategic importance as well.

Idlout’s defection strengthens the Liberal government’s position in Ottawa: the Liberals now hold 170 seats in the House of Commons out of 343, just two short of a majority. According to Reuters, if the Liberals perform well in the April 13 by-elections, Carney’s government could move even closer to a full parliamentary majority.

The NDP criticized Idlout’s decision. Interim party leader Don Davies said that if an MP changes political affiliation, that decision should be put before voters.
