Canada Tightens Bail and Sentencing Rules

Justice Minister Sean Fraser introduced Bill C-14 (Bail and Sentencing Reform Act) to toughen bail conditions and penalties for violent and repeat offenders.

Those charged with auto theft, break-ins, human trafficking, or sexual assault must now prove why they should be released before trial. Police will be barred from releasing suspects if it endangers public safety, and courts must impose strict conditions, including weapons bans.

The bill introduces consecutive sentences for repeat crimes and bans house arrest for sexual and child-related offences.

Fraser said the reform aims to restore public trust in the justice system, noting that violent crime in Canada has risen by 41 percent since 2014.
