King Charles and Queen

King Charles III and Queen Camilla's visit to Canada's capital has come to an end, leaving thousands of Ottawa residents and visitors with lasting memories. From early Tuesday morning, fans lined Wellington Street hoping to catch a glimpse of the royal couple.

The highlight was the ceremonial procession from the Bank of Canada to the Senate. The King and Queen were greeted by a guard of honour from the Royal Canadian Regiment and a 21-gun salute. At the Senate, the King formally opened Parliament with his first speech from the throne as monarch, an event not done since 1977.

In the speech, Charles emphasised his love for Canada, calling it his 20th visit and noting how "a little piece of Canada is growing deeper in my heart." Former prime ministers Justin Trudeau and Stephen Harper, as well as former governors, were among those invited.

Many in the audience, including Anna Zwaan and Sitali Deverge, called the meeting a “once-in-a-lifetime moment.” Former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney noted the importance of the visit as a symbol of Canada’s sovereignty and historical continuity.

After the ceremony, the monarchs headed to the National War Memorial, where they ended their two-day visit. “Come again,” chanted the royal couple.
