First Nations tell province they must have their consent to mine Ring of Fire:

The Ontario government is preparing legislation that would speed up mineral development by designating key areas as “special economic zones.” The first to be affected would be the Ring of Fire region in the province’s north, which is rich in critical minerals for battery production.

Premier Doug Ford said the zones could be used for other projects, such as a tunnel under Highway 401 or pipelines. According to him, the accelerated development is a response to economic pressure from the United States and President Trump.

However, many First Nations communities are expressing concerns. They are demanding full participation in the development of projects and reminding them of their right to consultation. Three communities (Marten Falls, Webequie and Aroland) have already entered into agreements with the province, but most have not. “There can be no economic reconciliation without participation,” said regional chief Abram Benedict.

Wyloo Canada, the company developing the Eagle’s Nest mine, supports the initiative, noting that the new rules will reduce bureaucracy. However, the obligation to consult with Indigenous peoples remains.

The bill also cancels a number of environmental assessments, including a proposed landfill in southwestern Ontario that has generated further controversy.
