Canada has filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization dispute settlement body against US customs duties. This was reported by RIA Novosti.

It is known that the country sent out an application to WTO members on March 5. "Canada asked, as part of the WTO dispute settlement, to begin consultations with the United States regarding new tariff measures imposed by the United States on Canadian goods," the organization's document notes.

The US authorities have imposed duties on imports of goods from Canada, the rates will be 25 percent of the customs value. The exception was energy resources, which can be supplied to the United States at a rate of 10 percent. The White House imposed similar duties of 25 percent on products from Mexico.

In addition, the US increased duties on goods from China from 10 to 20 percent.

President Donald Trump confirmed that the tariffs would go into effect without exceptions, adding that there were no options left for either Mexico or Canada to avoid them.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in turn, said that the US had started a trade war against Ottawa with its decision to impose tariffs.

According to the prime minister, the country would retaliate by imposing 25 percent tariffs on approximately $107 billion worth of American goods. He explained that the restrictions would go into effect immediately on $30 billion worth of goods, with the rest coming in 21 days.
